Affiliate relationships for making money on Instagram

Facebook announced the possibility for Facebook users, including the creators on Instagram, to make money from their followers and their content through creating affiliate relationships. The ultimate goal is to create a platform through which content creators on social media can make a living.

Several features are available to a select group of creators in the United States while others are available immediately. Facebook announced initiatives to reward content creators for their work and to promote their products, a move that will turn the company into a platform for content creators.

A prominent part of the announcement explicitly mentions that the new tools are intended to help creators develop their careers.

The announcement:

“We want Instagram and Facebook to serve as a home base for creators to tell their story, grow and make a living.…Today’s updates are a big part of a broader effort to support creators as they build their careers. …we are committed to building the right mix of tools to help them accomplish their goals.”

We ignore the fact that Instagram and Facebook have evolved into social marketplaces of ideas, entertainment, and products by looking at them strictly as social networks. By providing a platform for creators and consumers to interact, Instagram and Facebook have taken on the role of creating a network.

Instagram affiliate:

Creators will be able to earn commissions on products they promote by using Instagram’s native affiliate tool. In the Instagram app, you can access the entire affiliate experience. “When people come across an affiliate post from a creator featuring a tagged product, they will see “Eligible for commission” at the top of the post, so it’s clear that their purchases help support that creator.”

Creators are being chosen to test this feature over the coming months. “Affiliate will test with a small group of US-based creators and businesses including Benefit, Kopari, MAC, Pat McGrath Labs and Sephora, and will expand to more partners in the future.”

Shopping through social media:

Creators will soon be able to link their stores from their Instagram profiles and to open their shops to sell merchandise, according to the announcement. For now, this service is available only to US creators, and will be fully rolled out before Christmas.

“For creators who already have their product lines, they can now link their shop to their personal profile in addition to their business profile. Creators will also be able to set up a new shop and drive excitement with exclusive product launches from the Instagram app by linking their account with one of our four merchandise partners: Bravado/UMG, Fanjoy, Represent, and Spring.’ This week, these opportunities will go live.

These opportunities come in the form of Milestones for Instagram Live, which make creators eligible to receive more money when they achieve them. This extra earning opportunity on Facebook is known as a Challenge. Facebook and Instagram are social networks typically supported by advertising. In addition to creating content, Instagram and Facebook are becoming social marketplaces. Creators can now monetize their content and products in multiple ways.
